Mission and Facts

Children Without Borders is a nonprofit organization that provides life saving medical care to children and health education for families in underserved countries.

What does Children Without Borders do?
Children Without Borders is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization that provides life saving medical care to children and health education for families in underserved countries. We accomplish this by working with local and international partners to build health services and knowledge that can be shared across cultures, establish and operate sustainable clinics, conduct research and training, and arrange volunteer opportunities.

Who are the people running Children Without Borders?
Children Without Borders is founded and run by a small group of greater Boston area physicians and citizen philanthropists. All have generously donated their time and expertise to create a local, grassroots organization with global impact. Our team is lead by a Board of Directors including two experienced physicians, Dr. George Whitelaw and Dr. Carlos Fernando Bazoberry. For more detailed information about our co-founders and Board of Directors, please see our leadership section. The Board is supported by the Executive and Advisory Committees, all volunteers with diverse leadership experiences.

Where does Children Without Borders Operate?
Our first clinic and Central American Campus are in Costa Rica. This area has a population of 4.5 million people, including an underserved refugee population. We started in Costa Rica because of its need for safe living medical care, cooperative government agencies, local partnerships and support, a complementary health care system and a strategic location for practical expansion into other nearby countries.

How is Children Without Borders funded?
Children Without Borders is supported by the generosity of over 100 friends and is funded by private donations and matched gifts. Some organizations have graciously provided medical services, supplies and referrals. We are moving forward with plans to receive financial support through student intern programs, corporate donations, grants and other sources.

How are donations and other contributions used?
More than ninety percent of all donated funds go directly to health care for children and the operations of our clinic and Central American Headquarters. A majority of administrative work is done by volunteers.

What other organizations work with and support Children Without Borders?
The following organizations currently have a working partnership with Children Without Borders:

  • Hospital de Niños
  • University of Costa Rica Medical School
  • Costa Rican Ministry of Health
  • The Shriners Hospitals for Children
  • International Medical Equipment Collaborative (IMEC)
  • Boston University Medical School
  • Tufts University Medical School

We are also in the process of developing relationships with leading medical institutions and schools in the U.S.

Is there a student intern or volunteer program?
Yes! Children Without Borders has a burgeoning student intern program as well as opportunities in medical, public health and other disciplines. We also have the ability to accommodate non-student and medical volunteer experiences. Working with our staff in the barrio clinic and at the Central American Campus, volunteers can help improve the health and lives of many children. At the same time, volunteers are learning and possibly earning school credits. Because each individual has different abilities and requirements, we can work with you and/or your school to tailor a program that works best for you, the school and Children Without Borders.

History and Vision for the Future
Children Without Borders was formed when Dr. Whitelaw and Dr. Bazoberry decided to separate from a similar organization based in the Midwest so that they could assist children and their families more closely and effectively in their home country. Since that time, Children Without Borders has expanded to include several board members, advisors and ancillary staff.
Children Without Borders aims to sustain its current work in Tibas, Costa Rica, and expand into large barrio communities in the San Jose area. Eventually, the organization hopes to replicate its successes in other Central American countries.
In order to accomplish these goals and ultimately the vision of Children Without Borders, the charity aims to engage itself with additional partners in the United States, Costa Rica and throughout Central America. Through close relationships with citizens, businesses, organizations and government, Children Without Borders can do its work more effectively and reach more children and families in dire need. Without this essential support and the generous donations of individuals, Children Without Borders will falter and hundreds of those in need with be left to fend for themselves in a dramatically underserved and forgotten community.
